Let's work together to prevent African swine fever! The most serious penalty for carrying meat to Taiwan is NT$1 million.
In order to prevent African swine fever, the Council of Agriculture of Executive Yuan (COA) will seize inbound passengers who carry meat from an infected area since December 18, 2018 and the first time for offend the regulation will get fine NT$200,000. Some people's groups protested against for the new residents and migrant workers because of the lack of information on carrying meat, and punishment. They suggested that the government have to strengthen multi-party propaganda. Taipei City Foreign and Disabled Labor Office made information guide in many languages, in order to allowing foreign workers and new residents to join the fight against African swine fever.
In August 2018, there is an outbreak of pigs infected with African swine fever virus in China. In order to protect the domestic animal husbandry industry, the Customs Department of the National Immigration Agency (NIA) strengthened border baggage inspection and imposed fines on passengers who illegally carried meat. On December 18, 2018, the Council of Agriculture upgrade the epidemic prevention measure and the first time for offend the regulation will get fine NT$200,000.
However, as Southeast Asian countries are not a part of the African swine fever infected area, foreign workers or new residents returning home may offend the law due to the misunderstanding. (cannot bring meat or meat product from aboard to Taiwan)
On December 19, 2018, Taipei City Foreign and Disabled Labor Office announced the Propaganda "Working Together to Prevent African Swine Fever – Foreign Workers Hometown Languages Propaganda", reminding the returning foreign workers to abide the regulations on carrying meat products to Taiwan when entering the country. And avoid self-involved or other people entrusted to bring meat-based contraband into the country. If you carry meat products from China, Africa and other affected areas (from aboard), the highest penalty might be NT$1 million.

Lai xiang-ling (賴香伶) Director of Department of Labor, Taipei City Government said that the protection of African swine fever epidemic is to protect the production industry and economy. Therefore, it is necessary to fully assist the national epidemic prevention policy to promote and implement it, avoiding the occurrence in Taiwan. The intermediary company should also strengthen the relevant reminders and propaganda to foreign workers, so that they have the same epidemic prevention concept and correct practices.
