Known for its multiculturalism and warm hospitality, the Philippines also boasts a variety of traditional desserts that are essential in festive celebrations. To promote cultural exchange, the Hualien County Service Center of the National Immigration Agency&rsquos Northern District Office held a Filipino dessert-making event at the end of March, allowing participants to experience Philippine traditions through food while learning cultural stories.
The event invited Lin Tzu-Yi, a new resident from the Philippines who has lived in Hualien for over 20 years, to lead the workshop. With her excellent culinary skills, Lin has integrated Filipino desserts into local life and actively promoted Filipino cuisine through markets and community events. She recalled how homesickness led her to start making traditional desserts like Halo-Halo, cassava cake, and coconut milk cake, which not only brought her comfort but also became a bridge between Taiwanese and Filipino cultures.
