The National Immigration Agency (NIA) warned that in recent years, some Taiwanese travelers visiting mainland China were misled by local travel agencies claiming they could arrange third-country visas or fast-track border clearance. As a result, these travelers applied for one-time Chinese border travel passports, leading to the revocation of their household registration in Taiwan and the loss of their Taiwan status and related rights.
The NIA stated that under the Act Governing Relations between the People of the Taiwan Area and the Mainland Area, Taiwanese citizens are prohibited from establishing household registration in mainland China or holding a Chinese passport. Those who violate the law will lose their status as people of the Taiwan area. If reported by other authorities or the public and verified through administrative procedures, the NIA will notify household registration offices to revoke the individual's Taiwan household registration in accordance with the law.
The NIA also reminded the public that the regulations governing restoration of Taiwan status were amended and took effect in November 2025, with stricter review standards. Taiwanese travelers are urged not to apply for Chinese border travel documents for short-term convenience, as this may result in irreversible damage to their legal status and rights.
