The Ministry of the Interior's National Immigration Agency recently held the "Empowering You for a New Life" event at the GIS MOTC International Convention Center, emphasizing that the scope of the New Immigrants Basic Act has been expanded to include professional and technical immigrants. Deputy Director-General Chen Chien-Cheng stated that in the future, overseas students who obtain a work permit from the Ministry of Labor and change their residence status will qualify as new immigrants. The government also welcomes international professionals to settle in Taiwan, promoting multicultural integration.
To help new immigrants adapt to life in Taiwan, the Immigration Agency has integrated various welfare and rights information into the "New Immigrants Empowerment and Development Information Platform," available in seven languages (Chinese, English, Vietnamese, Indonesian, Thai, Khmer, and Burmese). Additionally, a LINE official account has been established to provide instant information services. This event invited representatives from the National Development Council, the Workforce Development Agency under the Ministry of Labor, the Overseas Community Affairs Council, and international student groups to exchange experiences, creating a lively atmosphere.Deputy Director-General Chen Chien-Cheng of the Immigration Agency delivers a speech at the "Empower You for a New Life" event (Photo/Source: Immigration Agency Website)
The event featured a puppet show adapted from Journey to the West, creatively promoting the expanded scope of the New Immigrants Basic Act through engaging storytelling and interactive sessions to deepen understanding. Additionally, children of new immigrants performed an energetic street dance, showcasing diverse cultural characteristics.
On-site booths were set up by government agencies and new immigrant groups, including the Taipei National Taxation Bureau under the Ministry of Finance, Taipei City Police Department’s Zhongzheng First Precinct, and the Coast Guard Administration. These booths engaged with visitors through interactive games and offered delightful prizes. The Immigration Agency hopes this event encourages overseas students and new immigrants to showcase their talents and contribute to Taiwan's prosperous future.
