Strict border control for incoming foreign nationals and entry priority for incoming foreign and overseas Chinese students

Strict border control measures were implemented to avoid the risk of any COVID-19 Delta variant carriers from entering Taiwan. However, many foreign professionals were unable to enter because of the suspension of their visas issued by foreign institutions, which led to employee shortages in local tech companies.

In response to the employee shortages the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC), commander Chen Shih-chung (陳時中) stated that it can be solved through a "Special Case type" response. If necessary, employee replacement will be allowed.

Chen Shih-chung stated that despite their visa suspensions, foreign talents working in local Taiwanese tech companies are allowed to enter Taiwan if it is absolutely necessary. The CECC requests relevant units to perform necessary evaluations to see if they can consider these foreign talents in entering Taiwan.

Furthermore, the incoming school year is expected to begin in September. The Ministry of Education (MOE) intends to give priority to about 13,000 foreign and overseas Chinese students to enter Taiwan. However, there is a concern regarding quarantine procedures that might delay the arrival of students. CECC commander Chen stated that the MOE will be reviewing the plan soon.
