To reduce the risk of chronic diseases, maintaining regular exercise and a balanced diet is important, while early health screenings are equally essential. At the recent Health Taiwan Forum, Taiwan's Health Promotion Administration reminded the public that adults can take advantage of preventive health services starting at age 30 to detect health risks early and improve their lifestyles.
According to the Health Promotion Administration, about one in four elementary school children is overweight or obese, and nearly half of adults are overweight. Nearly 80% of people do not consume enough vegetables, fruits, dairy products, or nuts, while about 60% do not meet the recommended level of physical activity, highlighting the importance of developing healthy habits from childhood.
Since 2025, the eligibility age for adult preventive health services has been lowered to 30. Adults aged 30–39 can receive one free health checkup every five years, including physical examinations, blood and urine tests, chronic disease risk assessment, and personalized health counseling. As of May 2026, more than 475,000 people had completed the service, with about 30% found to have at least one abnormal indicator related to hypertension, hyperglycemia, or hyperlipidemia, and 19.3% meeting the criteria for metabolic syndrome.
People can also use the online Chronic Disease Risk Assessment tool provided by the Health Promotion Administration to estimate their 10-year risk of coronary heart disease, stroke, diabetes, hypertension, and major cardiovascular events based on their health checkup results, helping them better manage their health.
