Fraud groups are also taking the opportunity to target consumers’ shopping needs, using tactics such as low prices, limited quantities and no need to wait in line to lure people into placing orders, and then using fake logistics customer service, fake shopping websites and fake purchasing agents to defraud consumers of money and personal information. The 165 Anti-Fraud Campaign reminds consumers to remain vigilant when shopping for festive products online and avoid falling into fraud traps.A common fake logistics customer service scam involves contacting consumers on the grounds of abnormal orders, failed payments or the need for re-authentication, and then inducing them to operate ATMs or online banking or provide financial information. Fake shopping websites may attract consumers to place orders with prices far below market prices and then require payment through unfamiliar payment links. Fraud groups may also impersonate purchasing agents, using popular mooncakes or limited-edition gift boxes as bait to request consumers’ personal information or conduct suspicious transactions.The 165 Anti-Fraud Campaign reminds consumers to remember the three anti-fraud rules of “do not trust, do not click and do not operate” when shopping online for mooncakes and gift boxes. When seeing messages about prices that are obviously too low or limited-time purchases, do not rush to place an order. Instead, verify the seller and website information first. When receiving unfamiliar websites or payment links, do not click them arbitrarily.   Companionship Over Restrictions: Pingtung Urges Parents to Help Children Build Healthy Digital Habits

  Smartphones and the internet have become part of children's learning, social lives and daily routines, but excessive use can affect their physical and mental well-being. A 2024 World Health Organization Europe study of nearly 280,000 adolescents aged 11, 13 and 15 across 44 countries and regions found that problematic social media use increased from 7% in 2018 to 11% in 2022. Another 36% said they were almost constantly online keeping in touch with friends, highlighting the growing importance of healthy digital habits for children's mental health.The Pingtung County Government Health Bureau recently held a seminar on parent-child communication, urging parents not to rely solely on taking away phones or banning internet use when children become overly absorbed online. Such approaches may instead increase conflict within the family. The bureau recommends that parents focus on understanding, interaction and listening, first learning why their children use the internet and what they need from it before agreeing on screen-time limits and family digital rules.Health Bureau Director Chang Hsiu-chun said the internet itself is not the problem. The priority is helping children learn how to use it in a healthy way. Children may spend long periods online for social interaction, entertainment, stress relief or a desire for recognition. Parents should therefore look beyond screen time and create more opportunities for family interaction through meals, exercise and outdoor activities.The Health Bureau said parents should also watch for whether internet use is interfering with daily life, rather than focusing only on the number of hours spent online.   Hinoki Aroma and Steam Dreams: Unveiling Historical Images of the Baxienshan Forestry Industry in 1927

  Baxienshan Forestry Farm, one of Taiwan's three major forestry farms during the Japanese colonial period, was once selected as one of the famous “Eight Views of Taiwan” for its beautiful scenery. Drawing on the National Center of Photography and Images' collection of the “Commemorative Photo Album of the Taichung Branch of the Forestry Office,” the center invited Professor Hsieh Kun-Hua of National Chung Hsing University's Center for Advanced Studies in Humanities and Social Sciences to conduct research and interpretation of the images. The result is the online exhibition “Hinoki Aroma and Steam Dreams: Unpacking the Secret Photo Album of the Forestry Office Taichung Branch in 1927,” inviting the public to explore the history of Taiwan's mountain forests.The year 1927 marked an important turning point for Baxienshan Forestry Farm. Its administrative center was moved from the mountainous area to Fengyuan, a transportation hub on the plains, and renamed the “Forestry Office Taichung Branch.” The change helped Fengyuan develop into an important center of the timber industry. Mountain railways and cable systems built for forestry development demonstrated the engineering and transportation technology of the time. The photo album also documents timber storage ponds, office buildings and the Yixianzhuang lodging facility, showing the close relationship between forestry development, the growth of Fengyuan and the regional economy.The history continued after World War II. The album includes a 1951 group photograph of logging workers, offering a different view of life from the formal official images of the Japanese colonial period. Since Taiwan fully prohibited the harvesting of natural forest timber in 1991, Baxienshan Forestry Farm has gradually transformed into an environmental education site, while forest management has shifted from timber production toward ecological conservation and natural resource management.The online exhibition features 54 historical images divided into four themes: “Steel Arteries Above the Clouds: Engineering Marvels of Forest Railways and Cableways,” “The Palace of Wood: From Primeval Forests to the Fengyuan Timber Pond,” “Daily Life in the Mountains: Officials, Workers' Quarters and Rituals,” and “A Postcolonial Gaze: A Dialogue Across Time Between the Postwar Period and Today.” The exhibition offers an opportunity to explore Taiwan's forestry history and local development through historical images.The National Center of Photography and Images, Taipei is located at No. 70, Section 1, Zhongxiao West Road, Zhongzheng District, Taipei City. It is open Tuesday to Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and closed on Mondays. The online exhibition is available on the National Center of Photography and Images website.
