With the rapid advancement of technology, the retail industry is undergoing a smart transformation. Taiwan’s comprehensive display technology supply chain, combined with innovative applications, showcases significant development potential. The Industrial Development Bureau of the Ministry of Economic Affairs has partnered with display technology companies to integrate flexible signboards, interactive display screens, and electronic labels with AI sensing, facial recognition, and big data analysis, enriching the in-store shopping experience with interactive engagement.
At the Taipei HANDS Miramar branch, the Industrial Development Bureau assisted Darwin Precision in implementing ultra-thin flexible display technology to create a "lightweight AI-generated virtual store manager." Consumers can use a dedicated experience cushion to watch product videos and listen to audio descriptions. AI voice generation technology provides an intuitive presentation of product information. This system also integrates electronic paper display boards with IR optical positioning, allowing users to quickly locate products by entering their names, improving product search efficiency by 60% and reducing shopping anxiety, enabling consumers to enjoy a seamless shopping experience.
Meanwhile, at the Hanshin Arena Shopping Plaza in Kaohsiung, the Industrial Development Bureau collaborated with Fanglue Electronics to develop Mini LED technology, demonstrating a new smart display application. A circular column in the food court is equipped with a wraparound dynamic display screen, clearly showcasing the latest promotions and event information at a 150-degree viewing angle.
Additionally, the elevated V-shaped display screen enhances the visual experience while maintaining transparency, significantly improving shopping comfort and achieving a 90% customer satisfaction rate.Kaohsiung Hanshin Arena Plaza Introduces an Ultra-Thin Flexible Wraparound Dynamic Screen with a Cylindrical Design, Displaying Promotions and Event Information in Real-Time (Image/Source: Ministry of Economic Affairs Website)
Since 2021, the Industrial Development Bureau has promoted the "Smart Display Industry Cross-Domain Application and Field Promotion Program," accelerating the transition of the display industry toward high-margin, high-value-added markets. To date, 52 integrated solutions have been developed and applied in smart retail and smart entertainment sectors, accumulating over 10 million service interactions, generating an estimated NT$5 billion in economic value, and successfully expanding into the Japanese, Thai, and Malaysian markets.
