Widely regarded as one of the "most anticipated Japanese festivals," the Koenji Awa Odori from Tokyo—an event that attracts over a million spectators annually—is making a much-anticipated return to Banqiao on April 19 (Saturday) after captivating audiences in 2017 and 2019. Over a hundred dancers in traditional attire will take to the streets, bringing a vibrant taste of Japan to the heart of springtime Banqiao.Tokyo Koenji Awa Odori from Japan will return to perform in Banqiao on the 19th. According to Lai Chun-Mu, head of Banqiao Cihui Temple—the event organizer—the Awa Odori is a traditional Bon dance with over 400 years of history, originating in Tokushima. It has now become one of Tokyo’s iconic summer festivals. The performance fuses power and grace: male dancers step in sync with booming drumbeats, showcasing strength and rhythm, while female dancers glide elegantly to the music, embodying fluidity and charm.Recent photo of Tokyo Koenji Awa Odori dancers (Photo: New Taipei City Government website)Recent photo of Tokyo Koenji Awa Odori dancers (Photo: New Taipei City Government website)

The event will kick off with an opening ceremony and a stationary performance at 5 PM on April 19 in front of Banqiao Cihui Temple, followed by a street parade. The route will go along Nanmen Street and Guanqian West Road to Jieyun Temple for another performance stop, then continue along Fuzhong Road, culminating in a grand finale at Fuzhong Plaza in front of the Banqiao District Office. Each stop will feature approximately 15 minutes of dancing, inviting the public to feel the energy of the large dance troupe up close.

Banqiao District Chief Chen Qi-Zheng noted that to ensure safety and smooth traffic flow, road closures will be in effect. On April 19 from 4 PM to 8 PM, Fuzhong Road (between Wenhua Road and Ximen Street) will be closed to vehicles, with police and traffic volunteers assisting in guidance. Additionally, the YouBike station at Exit 3 of Fuzhong MRT Station will be temporarily closed from 1 PM to 8 PM. Attendees are encouraged to take public transportation and follow on-site traffic instructions.

Known for its energetic rhythm and colorful costumes, Awa Odori consistently draws attention from international audiences. This event not only promotes cultural exchange between Taiwan and Japan but also infuses Banqiao with the festive spirit of a traditional Japanese celebration—definitely a must-see!
