Synthetic hair extensions widely used in braiding styles may contain chemicals that raise health concerns, according to new findings that have prompted closer scrutiny of beauty products commonly marketed to Black consumers. The issue has drawn attention from advocacy groups and regulators focused on product safety.

The concerns stem from research cited by CNN, which reported that testing detected potentially hazardous substances in certain synthetic braiding hair products. These chemicals, including compounds associated with irritation or longer-term health risks, may be released when the hair is heated or worn over time.

Hair braiding is a longstanding cultural and protective styling practice within Black communities, and synthetic extensions are often chosen for affordability and versatility. However, consumer advocates argue that clearer labeling, ingredient transparency and stronger oversight are needed to ensure products do not pose avoidable risks.

Regulatory bodies are now reviewing the findings as discussions continue over standards for cosmetics and personal care items. Experts say additional research will be necessary to determine the scale of exposure and whether manufacturing reforms are required to better protect consumers.
