Enterovirus infections can be particularly troublesome for children, whose weaker immune systems make them more susceptible. Symptoms such as hand, foot, and mouth disease, including mouth ulcers and sore throats, can make eating and speaking painful. Heho dietitian Liu Siyu shares three key dietary tips to ease symptoms and promote recovery.
First, staying hydrated is crucial to prevent dehydration caused by enteroviruses. Parents should monitor their child’s urine output, frequency, and color. Recommended drinks include plain water, rice water, fruit juice, or electrolyte beverages. Avoid caffeinated drinks like tea or soda, which may worsen dehydration.Frequent handwashing and maintaining a clean environment are key to effectively reducing the risk of enterovirus infection. Second, cold foods can relieve oral pain. Mouth ulcers and throat pain from the virus often make children lose their appetite. Chilled foods like yogurt, ice cream, pudding, and cold fruits can help numb the pain and make eating more comfortable.
Third, during the initial stage of infection, appetite may decrease, and forcing food isn’t necessary. Once appetite returns, provide high-calorie, easy-to-swallow foods like egg porridge, thick soups, and soft noodles. Snacks such as steamed egg custard, tofu pudding, and milkshakes are also nutritious and easy to digest.Staying well-hydrated is crucial. (Image: Courtesy of Heho Health)
Fried, oily, sugary, or spicy foods should be avoided, as they irritate the throat and weaken the immune system. Parents should maintain hygiene by ensuring frequent handwashing, clean environments, and avoiding crowded areas to reduce infection risk.
