During a child's development and learning journey, parents often ask: &ldquoHow can we help our children consistently show good behavior?&rdquo Experts point out that the way parents respond plays a crucial role. According to the behavioral theory known as the &ldquoLaw of Effect,&rdquo the consequences of a behavior will determine whether it is likely to be repeated. Positive feedback-such as praise or rewards-increases the likelihood of the behavior recurring, while negative outcomes reduce it.
The Hong Kong Education Bureau recommends that parents begin with four key approaches:
- Specific Verbal Praise &ndash Use clear, descriptive statements like &ldquoYou helped put away the colored pencils&mdashso thoughtful!&rdquo Avoid praise that sounds like criticism.
- Supportive Eye Contact and Gestures &ndash Smiles, nods, and thumbs-up help children feel acknowledged and affirmed.
- Reward Systems &ndash Design small rewards tailored to your child&rsquos interests, and reduce their frequency gradually once the behavior becomes a habit.
- Behavioral Reward Charts &ndash Set clear, specific goals and allow children to earn stamps or stickers that they can exchange for activities or items they enjoy.

Experts emphasize that when a child&rsquos behavioral maturity is still developing, positive reinforcement is especially important. It helps build confidence and intrinsic motivation. With simple and practical methods, parents can effectively cultivate good behavioral habits in everyday life.
