  Tesco, the UK's largest private-sector employer, has introduced paid “safe leave” for employees experiencing domestic abuse, becoming the first major British supermarket to offer the benefit. Employees can take up to three days of paid leave each year, with the time used flexibly to deal with safety and practical matters related to domestic abuse.The policy applies to Tesco's roughly 300,000 employees and can be used for activities including attending court hearings, arranging emergency accommodation, changing locks, securing childcare and separating finances. Developed with the shopworkers' union Usdaw, the policy does not require employees to provide formal evidence of abuse when requesting the leave, reducing barriers for those seeking help.Tesco has also trained managers across the business to recognize potential signs of domestic abuse, support affected employees and connect them with specialist services. The company said the policy is intended to give employees the time and practical support they need during difficult circumstances, without forcing them to choose between their jobs and their safety.More than 3 million people experienced some form of domestic abuse in England and Wales last year, according to the charity SafeLives, with women making up the majority of victims. The UK Parliament is considering a bill that would provide up to 10 days of paid leave for domestic abuse victims in England and Wales. Northern Ireland introduced legislation guaranteeing 10 days of paid leave in 2020, while similar protections exist in Australia, New Zealand and the Philippines.

  U.S. Girl Nearly Dies After Drinking Raw Milk as California Regulation Comes Under Scrutiny

  According to a ProPublica investigation, a 17-month-old California girl developed a severe E. coli infection after drinking unpasteurized raw goat milk and was hospitalized in a pediatric intensive care unit, where she was placed on a ventilator. The farm that supplied the milk was not licensed to sell raw milk for human consumption. Despite evidence gathered by regulators, the case has raised questions about the state's handling of unlicensed raw milk sales.The girl's mother, Emily Marris, had learned about the farm through a Facebook group and purchased its raw goat milk in hopes that the unprocessed product would help relieve her daughter's constipation. Doctors later suspected the milk could have been the source of the girl's E. coli infection. Another 6-year-old girl who had also consumed milk from the same farm was hospitalized with an infection involving the same strain and developed potentially life-threatening complications. The cases prompted attention from California health and food safety officials.California allows licensed farms to sell raw milk for human consumption, but they must meet sanitation requirements, undergo inspections and comply with food safety rules. Raw milk products must also carry warnings about the potential health risks associated with unpasteurized milk. According to California regulations, raw milk intended for human consumption must come from a properly licensed dairy and meet requirements covering animal health, refrigeration, packaging and microbiological safety.The farm involved in the cases was not listed among California's licensed raw milk dairies, yet ProPublica found that it advertised and sold unlabeled goat milk through social media. Messages provided by Marris indicated that the farm owner knew a young child was drinking the milk. Investigators later contacted the farm undercover through Facebook and attempted to purchase a gallon of goat milk to confirm whether it was selling raw milk without a license. However, the available evidence does not conclusively establish that the milk caused either child's infection. Testing of milk samples obtained during the investigation did not detect E. coli. The ProPublica investigation has therefore focused in part on how regulators responded after receiving information about the suspected outbreak.

  Pregnancy subsidy available early, Hsinchu County offers up to NT$20,000 per pregnancy

  Hsinchu County's Happy Pregnancy Support Program provides up to NT$20,000 per pregnancy. Eligible expenses include prenatal nutrition products, maternity clothing, postpartum meals, confinement services and medical costs not covered by National Health Insurance. Applicants can receive the full amount once or apply in two installments.The subsidy covers expenses from pregnancy through after childbirth. Eligible applicants can receive NT$20,000 once or NT$10,000 twice, including prenatal and daily living costs, postpartum meals, confinement services and some self-paid medical expenses.Applicants for the full amount at once or the second installment must complete at least 6 prenatal checkups. The subsidy is based on each pregnancy, not the number of fetuses, so twins and multiples remain eligible for up to NT$20,000 per pregnancy. Pregnant new immigrants must have a spouse registered in Hsinchu County for at least 1 year.Hsinchu County's births have declined in recent years, with last year's total down more than 20% from the previous year. Meanwhile, women aged 35 and above accounted for more than 30% of births in each of the past 2 years. The county therefore introduced the program to move birth support into pregnancy and provide practical help to families earlier.The program starts November 1. Eligible pregnant women can apply within 3 months after the due date, or within 3 months after childbirth if the actual birth is later. Applications are currently submitted on paper.
