A U.S. zoo has apologized after video footage of a kiwi named Paora being handled by visitors sparked outrage in New Zealand, where the bird is a national symbol. The video showed the nocturnal bird exposed to artificial light and touched by the public, leading to widespread concern over animal welfare.

Zoo Miami charged $23.36 for the “kiwi encounter,” which many criticized for stressing the endangered bird. An online petition quickly gained traction, and New Zealand's Department of Conservation also raised concerns. In response, the zoo ended the program immediately and pledged to build a new, non-contact habitat that supports Paora's natural behavior.A South Island brown kiwi imageBROKER/ShutterstockA South Island brown kiwi imageBROKER/Shutterstock

New Zealand Prime Minister Chris Hipkins praised the public's swift reaction, reflecting national pride in protecting the kiwi. Conservation efforts since 1991, including Operation Nest Egg, have helped boost kiwi survival rates.
