To promote the digital application of local languages, the Ministry of Education has launched the “Taiwanese Hokkien Input Method” app, which has recently been made available on the App Store and Google Play. The app allows users to input Taiwanese Hokkien directly on smartphones and tablets, making everyday communication and creative expression more convenient.
According to the Ministry of Education, the input method supports both phonetic input and voice recognition. Users can convert speech into text through voice input, lowering the barrier to writing and encouraging more people to use Taiwanese Hokkien in daily communication. For users unfamiliar with writing Taiwanese Hokkien characters, voice input also enables quick searching and text entry, expanding usage scenarios for local languages through digital technology.
In terms of system support, the Ministry of Education has continued to develop the “Reference Character List for Local Language Achievements” in recent years and completed cross-agency coordination. Apple has incorporated the full set of related character glyphs into its system updates, becoming the first international company to comprehensively support the display of local languages, significantly improving the convenience of reading and writing local language text on mobile and computer devices.
Additionally, to address situations where some devices cannot properly display Taiwanese Hokkien characters, the input method includes a built-in function that converts text into images, providing an alternative display option and increasing the circulation and visibility of Taiwanese Hokkien text on mobile devices. The Ministry of Education stated that user feedback will continue to be collected and functions will be regularly optimized, enabling more people to comfortably use Taiwanese Hokkien in their digital lives.
