When children start kindergarten, many parents wonder how to help them become more independent. Experts point out that basic self-care skills can be taught from the age of two. This stage is not only a crucial milestone in child development but also the foundation for building confidence and independence.

Self-care includes everyday tasks such as eating, washing, dressing, and using the toilet. While these may seem simple, they involve a combination of cognitive, language, motor, and social skills. For example, a two-year-old can practice feeding themselves with a spoon, brushing teeth, dressing in simple clothes, and throwing away trash&mdashactivities that build a sense of participation and achievement.Between 18 months and 2 years old, once toddlers can walk, understand, and express themselves, it's a good time to start teaching self-care skills. Occupational therapists recommend five key strategies for parents: simplify tasks, let the child try before offering help, use encouraging cooperative language, avoid forcing, and allow enough time for practice. These methods reduce frustration, boost motivation, and help children move from "wanting to try" to "being able to do it." As they grow, they will accomplish more on their own and demonstrate growing independence.
