During the Lunar New Year and Peace Memorial Day holidays, the Yilan–Hualien–Taitung region is expected to see heavy traffic as travelers return home or go on vacation. National Freeway No. 5 may experience congestion during peak hours. The Freeway Bureau stated that traffic diversion measures have been planned in advance based on historical holiday traffic data, urging the public to use public transportation to reduce congestion.
According to the bureau, southbound traffic peaks typically occur from the first to the third day of the Lunar New Year holiday and during the first two days of the Peace Memorial Day holiday, with traffic concentrated between 5 a.m. and 5 p.m. Northbound peak periods usually fall from the second to the fifth day of the Lunar New Year and the latter part of the Peace Memorial Day holiday, starting around 10 a.m. and lasting into late night hours. Ramp closures, high-occupancy vehicle controls, and ramp metering will be implemented as needed.
The bureau will also continue priority measures for intercity buses, including dedicated lanes and shoulder use. It is estimated that taking intercity buses between northern Taiwan and Yilan can save approximately 30 to 40 minutes compared with driving.
