Looking for an exercise that is easy to learn without being too physically demanding? Pickleball has rapidly gained popularity around the world in recent years. Combining elements of badminton, table tennis, and tennis, the sport is simple to learn, requires relatively little space, and offers moderate exercise intensity, making it an increasingly popular choice among older adults.
To encourage seniors to develop regular exercise habits, the Sports Administration of the Ministry of Sports partnered with the National Health Research Institutes to host the "Senior Pickleball Health Promotion Carnival." The event aimed to encourage older adults to stay active, improve their health, and enjoy a more socially engaged lifestyle through this emerging sport.
According to the Sports Administration, Taiwan's aging population continues to grow, making age-friendly sports programs increasingly important. Pickleball's accessibility, enjoyable gameplay, and social interaction have made it one of the fastest-growing recreational sports in many countries and an effective activity for promoting active aging.
The carnival attracted approximately 200 senior participants, who experienced pickleball through interactive games and hands-on activities. The event also welcomed members of senior fitness clubs and community care centers from Yunlin County, encouraging older adults to build regular exercise habits, maintain good health, and increase social participation.
The Sports Administration stated that it will continue working with central and local governments as well as academic institutions to promote sports programs suitable for people of all ages, helping create a healthier, more active, and inclusive sporting environment across Taiwan.
