To celebrate International Museum Day (5/18), Pinglin Tea Museum will host a special event on Saturday, May 17, titled &ldquoAisin Gioro&rsquos Vitality Secrets: Sütei Tsai Cultural Workshop.&rdquo The museum has invited a Mongolian cultural instructor to guide participants in experiencing the prairie-style salty milk tea and the mysterious bone divination game. The public is welcome to enjoy a weekend filled with exotic charm.
According to the New Taipei City Cultural Affairs Bureau, the museum is currently presenting the &ldquoTea and Kings&rdquo special exhibition, which features immersive imperial palace settings. Visitors can feel as though they are traveling through time to attend a royal tea banquet. The exhibition also showcases the Qing dynasty's milk tea traditions, where tea affairs were managed by a special court division and fresh milk was delivered daily from imperial cattle pens &mdash a reflection of the royals&rsquo passion for milk tea!The "Tea and Kings" special exhibition uses engaging displays to reveal court secrets about how dairy for milk tea was allocated based on rank in the Qing imperial palace. Mongolians call milk tea "Sütei Tsai", and during the Qing dynasty, the Manchu royal family &mdash originally from the northern steppe &mdash retained their dairy-rich diet after settling in China. Milk tea became an essential drink during everyday life, court feasts, rewards to officials, and hunting trips. Mongolians were even invited to the palace to prepare authentic versions. Rich and nourishing, it was regarded as the royal family&rsquos go-to vitality drink.
This workshop aligns with the exhibition theme and features Mongolian curator and cultural instructor Ms. Gu Huixin, who will share Mongolian traditions and demonstrate how to make salty milk tea served with milk skin pancakes. Participants can also try the rare Shagai bone divination, a traditional game used by Mongolians for fortune-telling, riddles, and entertainment. Without traveling far, visitors can explore the captivating world of Mongolian tea culture right at the museum. The "Tea and Kings" special exhibition introduces Manchu culinary traditions in the Qing court, where milk tea was often enjoyed alongside dairy products.
