To enhance driving safety for elderly drivers, the Ministry of Transportation will implement a new “graded and supportive license renewal system for senior drivers” starting in May this year. The policy adopts a tiered management mechanism based on different age groups, strengthening risk assessment and road safety. The Ministry of Transportation stated that supervisory and healthcare system resources across the country have gradually been integrated to assist seniors in completing physical examinations and license renewal procedures at nearby locations.
Under the new regulations, drivers aged 70 and above who complete a physical examination, free educational training, and hazard perception experience may extend the validity of their driver’s license until the age of 75. Drivers aged over 75 will continue to be required to renew their licenses every three years and must additionally undergo a cognitive function assessment to confirm that their driving ability meets road safety requirements.
In terms of service capacity, motor vehicle service locations in the Miaobei region have completed adjustments. The “Shangdehui” facility in Zhunan has been in operation since January 1 this year, integrating motor vehicle service hours that were previously dispersed across multiple locations in Toufen City. Currently, license renewal and related services are regularly provided every Thursday from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., with services suspended from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m., allowing the public to complete procedures in a single visit.
The Ministry of Transportation reminds elderly drivers that when applying for license renewal, they must prepare their original identification card, original driver’s license (not required if lost), seal, a medical examination form certified by a medical institution, and proof of a cognitive function assessment. In addition, two 1-inch photographs taken within the past two years and a fee of NT$50 are required. If renewing both automobile and motorcycle licenses at the same time, the fee is NT$100.
In addition, health centers in various regions provide physical examination services for elderly driver license renewal. The public may complete the examination in advance before visiting motor vehicle service locations, in preparation for the implementation of the new system in May.
