Amazon Steps Up Grocery Delivery Race, Tests 30-Minute Service in the U.S.

Amazon has begun testing a new ultra-fast grocery and essentials delivery service in parts of Seattle and Philadelphia, aiming to deliver orders within 30 minutes as it strengthens its position in the U.S. grocery e-commerce market.The service, branded “Amazon Now,” offers access to thousands of items, including fresh food, household essentials, pharmaceuticals, and selected consumer electronics. Prime members are eligible for discounted delivery fees starting at USD 3.99, while non-members face higher charges, with additional fees applied to low-value orders.Industry observers note that ultra-fast delivery is typically suited to impulse or last-minute purchases rather than routine bulk shopping. Even so, it has become a key battleground for retailers looking to capture more everyday spending and increase customer reliance on their platforms.Amazon continues to face strong competition from Walmart’s Walmart+ service and grocery delivery platform Instacart. Since August, the company has expanded same-day delivery for Prime members to more than 1,000 U.S. cities, with plans to reach 2,300 cities by the end of the year. According to Amazon, the 30-minute delivery test relies on strategically located small-scale fulfillment facilities near residential and work areas, serving as a trial model for future expansion.

Costco Challenges U.S. Tariffs in Court, Seeks to Preserve Refund Rights

Costco has launched legal action against the U.S. government, aiming to protect its ability to recover millions of dollars in tariff payments and to pause further collections while the policy remains under judicial review.The retailer argues that even if the tariffs are ultimately ruled unlawful, companies could still lose the chance to claim refunds due to strict administrative deadlines. To avoid that outcome, Costco is seeking court intervention to ensure previously paid duties remain eligible for reimbursement.According to court filings, tariffs must be formally liquidated within a set timeframe, after which refund claims may no longer be accepted. Costco said it attempted to secure an extension but was denied, prompting the company to pursue legal safeguards.Costco’s lawsuit reflects a broader pushback from corporate America. Firms across industries—including food, consumer goods, manufacturing, and automotive sectors—have filed similar cases to shield themselves from potential financial losses linked to the disputed tariffs.As one of the largest warehouse retailers in the United States, Costco has also adjusted its business strategy in response to rising trade costs, expanding domestic sourcing, streamlining suppliers, and increasing reliance on its private-label Kirkland brand.
