Rail travel lovers planning a trip to Japan this year may have one more reason to go. The Alishan Forest Railway and Cultural Heritage Office under Taiwan's Forestry and Nature Conservation Agency has partnered with Kurobe Gorge Railway and Oigawa Railway to launch a limited-time ticket exchange program, allowing travelers to extend their journey from Alishan to Japan's scenic mountain railway lines. The program has been rolling out since April 20 and is ideal for rail fans and independent travelers.
The offer is available to Taiwanese travelers holding Republic of China passports. Those who have ridden the Alishan Forest Railway and hold a used “Two-Day Branch Line Pass” for the recreation area, along with their passport, can redeem designated tickets on participating Japanese railway lines. The program helps reduce travel costs and adds flexibility to trip planning.
For the Kurobe Gorge Railway, the exchange program has been available from April 20 through November 30. Travelers can redeem a round-trip ticket from Unazuki to the day's operating terminal station. Known for its deep gorges, river valley scenery, and dramatic seasonal mountain views, the line is a favorite among visitors to Japan's Hokuriku region.
Meanwhile, the 40th anniversary exchange program with Oigawa Railway will begin on April 25 and run through December 31. Travelers can redeem a one-day pass for the Oigawa Main Line. The route features retro Showa-era stations and trains, as well as tea plantations and hot spring attractions, making it ideal for a relaxed day trip.
The office said it hopes the program will encourage more travelers to experience the beauty of Alishan while also exploring Japan's distinctive railway culture, deepening Taiwan-Japan rail exchange ties. Detailed redemption rules and usage information are available on the official website.
