The 2025 'Firefly Cinema' kicks off in southern and outlying island regions - inviting all to experience the touching charm of Taiwanese films

The &ldquo114th Firefly Cinema&rdquo film arts sharing initiative-Firefly Cinema of 2025-is set to tour southern Taiwan and the outlying islands (Penghu, Kinmen) from July 4 to November 22, 2025. This free nationwide screening series includes 12 Taiwanese films, such as the animated features Pigsy and Forest of Monsters, the documentary Earth and Soil, the biographical film My Father, Ying-Feng, the black comedy Director, You&rsquore Sick, the psychological thriller Ghost&rsquos Path, and the gender equality drama Spring Journey. Each film has earned acclaim, promising a meaningful cinematic experience.

Screening venues include Dingwan and Hudong in Penghu County Daming Hall and Zhongyi Marshal Temple in Minxiong, Chiayi County the Old Prison on Gengsheng Island and Zhongzheng Park in Chiayi City Wude Hall Plaza in Qishan, Kaohsiung Xin Chuan Bookstore in Neipu, Pingtung Baling Cultural Work Station in Guantian, Tainan Qionglin Garden and Gugang School Plaza in Kinmen. The tour will conclude warmly back at National Tainan Living Arts Center.

Launched by the Ministry of Culture&rsquos Bureau of Audiovisual and Music Industry Development in partnership with the National Tainan Living Arts Center, the Firefly Cinema is a key annual cultural initiative. Through local screenings, it brings major Taiwanese films to communities across Taiwan, matching films with the cultural themes and interests of each locale, fostering local discourse and engagement. The National Tainan Living Arts Center emphasizes that Firefly Cinema has long worked to introduce quality Taiwanese films to rural communities in southern Taiwan, enabling audiences to experience the depth and creativity of local cinema, broadening cultural horizons and nurturing community bonds. This year, in line with the Ministry&rsquos &ldquoTop 100 Cultural Base&rdquo policy, screenings were held at two historically significant locations: Kinmen&rsquos Gugang School and Chiayi City&rsquos Old Prison on Gengsheng Island&mdashrevitalizing these cultural spaces and infusing local communities with new cultural energy.

Through this tour, Firefly Cinema brings high-level Taiwanese films to life in southern communities. Post-screening discussions with special guests will facilitate shared reflections.
