The "Newcomer and Children's Dream-Building Plan," organized by the Immigration Agency, is entering its 10th year this year. Since its inception, the plan has been dedicated to helping newcomers and their children achieve their dreams. Participants' journeys in realizing their dreams have demonstrated incredible passion and perseverance, and their achievements and joys have inspired countless others. We will introduce the outstanding award winners of this year's "Environmental Protection and Sustainable Development Group," and see how these newcomers are giving back to their new home. Not only are these newcomers and second-generation immigrants serving society, but they are also contributing their efforts to the environmental protection and sustainable development of this land!Chen Yu-Hsuan overcame illness and received support from the NIA Dream Building Project with "The Sweet Legend of Liu Jia" (Photo/Source: NIA FB)
"The Legend of Half-Sweet Six-Acres" - Chen Yuxuan & Lin Ziwei
A few years ago, Chen Yuxuan, due to health issues, began to focus on health foods. The sweet potato plant, rich in fiber, iron, and potassium, also possesses the benefits of cooling the body, relieving summer heat, promoting detoxification and having antioxidant properties. Therefore, she and her son, Ziwei, decided to use the Dream-Building Plan to help them cultivate sweet potato plants on a half-acre plot of land. During the planting process, they faced challenges from pests and diseases. Traditional farming methods rely on chemical pesticides, which negatively impact health and the land.
Thus, they chose a non-toxic, environmentally friendly farming approach. They promote symbiosis, companionship, learning, and sharing between farmers and the land. They hope to encourage more people to participate in environmentally friendly farming, understand its benefits, and enjoy non-toxic sweet potatoes and vegetables, contributing to the protection of the environment and the promotion of biodiversity.

Lin Fen overcame economic hardship to transform from an office worker to an agricultural expert. With the support of her children, she participated in the Dream-Building Plan, and received funding to expand her farm. Adhering to non-toxic and environmentally friendly cultivation methods, she planted tomatoes, cabbages, and kale, and utilized social media for marketing. With increased production, Lin Fen regularly donated her harvest of vegetables and fruits to the church, and recycled discarded fruits from other farmers to make enzymes or compost. She continuously strives for environmentally friendly farming practices, hoping that more people can enjoy the non-toxic, healthy vegetables and fruits she has grown herself.
