According to the Taipei City Government, the Department of Information and Tourism (TPEDOIT) announced that the 2021 Taipei Lantern Festival will take place in Wanhua District between December 17 and 26. The event was postponed earlier in the year due to the pandemic.

The upcoming festival will feature the first-ever virtual lantern zone using AR technology, as well as an international celebrity zone for kids spotlighting characters from Sanrio Family and Paw Patrol. The organizer also invited performer Sung Shau-ching and Taiwan Opera Troupe to stage the “Recount Bangka” show during the festival.

In addition to the main lamp “NEW” and the three themed-zones of “Seven Colors,” “Eight Treasures,” and “New World,” the 2021 Taipei Lantern Festival combines IT solution with traditional arts to create the VR lantern zone. Akibo, the Creative Director of the festival, pointed out that AR is an important technology which has numerous applications. The event organizer worked with R&D teams to set up the unique area where visitors can experience the interactive displays by downloading the app through scanning the QR code either onsite or on the event website.

For kids and families, the characters from Sanrio Family – Hello Kitty, Pom Pom Purin, and Kiki & Lala – will join the charming canines from Paw Patrol at the lantern festival. There will also be 5 ‘Meet the Fans’ sessions for kids to say hello to these beloved mascots.

TPEDOIT Deputy Commissioner Lee Li-chu remarked that in addition to enjoying the decorations and lanterns at the festival venue in Wanhua District, the organizer has also prepared interesting programs to be streamed on the event’s website. These shows feature topics including lantern quizzes, celebrity discussions, and interview of artists. When they watch the broadcast, viewers may catch glimpse of QR code on the screen. By scanning the QR code and filling out the linked survey, they will have a chance to take part in a raffle with the top prize being a car!
