From smartphones and tablets to streaming videos and online games, screens have become a routine part of childhood. While digital technology offers educational and entertainment benefits, researchers are increasingly examining how extended screen exposure may influence children's developing brains during key stages of growth.

According to CNN, scientists are focusing on a concept known as the “criticome,” a critical period from birth through young adulthood when life experiences help shape brain development. Researchers suggest that heavy screen use during these years could affect how children develop language, attention, social skills and problem-solving abilities, particularly if screen time replaces real-world interactions and learning experiences.

Studies reviewed by researchers have found links between excessive screen use and changes in brain function related to attention, language and executive functioning. At the same time, some research suggests that certain educational content or supervised digital activities may provide benefits. Experts emphasize that the impact depends not only on how much time children spend on screens, but also on the type of content and the way technology is used.

Health specialists say the goal is not necessarily to eliminate screens, but to ensure they do not replace essential childhood experiences such as conversation, outdoor play, reading, creative activities and face-to-face social interaction. As digital devices become increasingly integrated into daily life, researchers continue to study how families can balance technology use with healthy child development.
