Many people skip health checkups because they feel physically well and notice no obvious discomfort. However, many cancers show almost no symptoms in their early stages. By the time noticeable physical changes appear, the disease may already have progressed for some time. The Taichung City Health Bureau reminds the public that regular screening is an important step in protecting health.

For women, breast cancer and cervical cancer are among the most common cancers that can be detected early through screening. Cervical cancer usually develops slowly, and regular Pap smear tests can help identify abnormal cells before they become cancerous. Breast cancer can be detected through mammography, allowing tumors to be found while they are still small and increasing the chances of successful treatment.

The government currently provides several free cancer screening services, including low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) for lung screening, mammography, Pap smear tests, fecal occult blood tests, and oral mucosal examinations. Starting in 2026, a stool antigen test for Helicobacter pylori will also be added, providing eligible people aged 45 to 74 with a once-in-a-lifetime testing opportunity.

In addition to maintaining regular daily routines and exercise habits, health checkups are recommended as part of yearly health planning. Eligible individuals can bring their National Health Insurance card to contracted medical institutions for screening.
