As family caregiving concepts continue to evolve, more fathers are becoming actively involved in childcare and taking on important caregiving roles within the family. After the Ministry of Labor introduced a flexible parental leave system that allows leave to be taken on a daily basis, applications continued to rise. The latest statistics show that the proportion of male applicants has surpassed that of female applicants for the first time, reflecting a growing trend of shared parenting responsibilities in Taiwanese families.
As of the end of May, the cumulative number of applicants for flexible parental leave had reached nearly 12,000 people, with more than 24,000 applications submitted. The figures demonstrate not only the practicality of the policy but also the increasing willingness of fathers to participate directly in their children's upbringing.

Nearly 12,000 Applicants, Accounting for More Than One-Quarter of All Parental Leave Users
According to Ministry of Labor statistics, by the end of May, a total of 11,950 people had applied for flexible parental leave, representing 26.1% of all parental leave applicants. In terms of application records, the total reached 24,624, accounting for 40.9% of all parental leave applications.
Because the flexible system allows employees to apply multiple times based on their needs, many parents arrange different leave periods according to their family caregiving situations. As a result, the number of applications has grown faster than the number of applicants. The Ministry of Labor believes the figures reflect genuine demand for flexible parental leave and expects applications to continue increasing as the system becomes more established.

Male Applicants Surpass Female Applicants for the First Time
The most notable finding in the latest statistics is that the proportion of male applicants exceeded that of female applicants for the first time. The Ministry of Labor reported that in May, men accounted for 50.3% of flexible parental leave applications, slightly higher than women at 49.7%. Looking at cumulative data, male applicants represented 48.4%, while female applicants accounted for 51.6%, significantly narrowing the gap between the two groups.
This change indicates that the traditional family model in which mothers served as the primary caregivers is gradually evolving. More fathers are choosing parental leave to take an active role in caring for and supporting their children's growth, rather than serving solely as the family's financial provider.
