Researchers have made new progress in understanding early human evolution after analyzing ancient proteins preserved inside fossilized teeth linked to Homo erectus, an early human ancestor that lived hundreds of thousands of years ago.

For decades, scientists have relied heavily on fossil shapes and ancient DNA to study prehistoric humans. However, DNA often breaks down in hot and humid environments, making it difficult to recover genetic material from many ancient remains. According to CNN, researchers say proteins found in teeth can survive much longer than DNA, offering a new method for studying ancient human species.

Homo erectus is considered one of the most important species in human evolutionary history. The species was among the first early humans to walk fully upright, use tools regularly, and migrate beyond Africa into Asia and Europe. Scientists believe the latest findings may help clarify how different ancient human populations were connected over time.

The research focused on proteins extracted from fossilized teeth discovered in East Asia. Experts said the protein analysis may reveal evolutionary relationships that cannot easily be identified through fossil appearance alone.
