Drinking water and going to the bathroom are part of daily life, but do you know what constitutes healthy urination? How many times should you urinate in a day? How much urine should you pass each time? These questions often confuse people. Dr. Du Yuan-Bo, Chief Physician at Shudian Clinic, reminds us that urinating more than 8 times a day with a small amount each time may indicate a problem with the bladder.
What is the normal frequency of urination?
Dr. Du states that a healthy adult typically urinates 5 to 7 times a day. &ldquoSome say 4 to 6 times during the day, plus one &lsquonight urination&rsquo before bed, which adds up to 5 to 7 times.&rdquo If you urinate more than 8 times a day, it is considered frequent urination.
He further explains that night urination refers to &ldquogetting up after falling asleep to urinate,&rdquo and no matter how many times, it counts as frequent urination. In other words, even if daytime urination is normal, frequent nighttime bathroom trips may still indicate frequent urination.

How much urine is normal per time?
Normally, the amount of urine passed should be 250 to 300 cc, which is equivalent to a mug&rsquos worth, and it should flow out smoothly without much effort. If you hold in your urine, you may feel a &ldquofull bladder sensation&rdquo at 300 cc, an &ldquourgent urge&rdquo at 350 cc, and 500 cc, the bladder muscles may begin to be damaged.
&ldquoBladder muscles are usually about 2 cm thick, but when you hold in 500 cc, they may shrink to only 0.5 cm and become filled with blood vessels, causing excessive pressure that may lead to urine reflux into the kidneys, causing kidney inflammation.&rdquo
Additionally, the bladder&rsquos &ldquoresidual urine&rdquo refers to the urine remaining in the bladder after urination, which should be below 50 cc. Anything beyond this may cause long-term bladder damage.
Proper urination speed and recommended water intake
The normal urination speed for men is about 15 cc per second, and for women, about 20 cc per second. With a urine output of 250 cc, it should be completed within 10 to 15 seconds. If urination requires effort, the urine flow is weak, the bladder feels incomplete, or urination takes too long, there may be an issue with the bladder.
Dr. Du reminds that the body excretes 2000 to 2200 cc of urine daily and requires about 3000 cc of water intake (including water from food). The daily intake should range from 2200 to 2500 cc, and should not fall below 1800 cc.

Conclusion
Normal urination habits and water intake are essential to maintaining bladder health. If you experience frequent urination, abnormal urine volume, or difficulty urinating, you should seek medical attention early to avoid bladder and kidney diseases.
