The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, established in 1870, houses over 5,000 years of human civilization and artistic treasures, attracting over five million visitors annually. From June 14 to October 12 this year, the National Palace Museum, in collaboration with The Metropolitan Museum of Art and Media Sphere Communications, will present "From Impressionism to Modernism: Masterpieces from The Metropolitan Museum of Art" at the Northern Branch of the National Palace Museum. This grand exhibition marks the first special exhibition since the museum's renovation.
This exhibition is The Met's first-ever showcase in Taiwan, featuring 81 selected paintings and drawings that span from the mid-19th to mid-20th centuries, covering Impressionism, Post-Impressionism, and early Modernism. The exhibit includes works by renowned artists such as Renoir, Van Gogh, Cézanne, Matisse, Gauguin, Seurat, and Pissarro, offering visitors a glimpse into nearly a century of Western artistic evolution.
A highlight of the exhibition is its focus on the prestigious Robert Lehman Collection, an important private art collection in the United States. Following Robert Lehman&rsquos passing in 1969, his foundation donated 2,700 works of art, spanning from the Renaissance to the 20th century, to The Met. This exhibition showcases selected masterpieces from the collection, arranged chronologically and divided into five themes: Body Postures, Portraits and Figures, Exploring Nature, From Cities to Countryside, and Waterfront Landscapes, reflecting the artists' evolving interpretations.
Notably, the exhibition also features works by prominent female artists, such as Mary Cassatt, Berthe Morisot, and Suzanne Valadon, emphasizing the rising influence of women in Western art history.
The National Palace Museum and The Met have a long-standing partnership. In 1961, The Met hosted an exhibition of the Palace Museum&rsquos collections in New York. In 1996, the "Treasures of Chinese Heritage" exhibition toured four major U.S. cities, attracting nearly one million visitors. This year, in celebration of the Palace Museum's 100th anniversary, this prestigious collection has been brought to Taiwan, allowing locals to experience world-class artistic treasures without traveling abroad.
