During the Lunar New Year, in addition to family gatherings and celebrations, the Health Promotion Administration (HPA) offers three simple exercise tips: Happy Moves, Easy Walking, and Warm-Up Preparation. These activities invite everyone to embrace fitness and welcome the New Year with energy and health.

Tip 1: Happy Moves – Get Active with Family and Friends
During the holiday, incorporate "Happy Moves" into activities like visiting relatives, outings, or shopping. This helps achieve the goal of 150 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity per week, as recommended by the World Health Organization. Adults and seniors should aim for 150 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise weekly, while children and adolescents need at least an hour of physical activity daily. Utilize community parks, walking trails, or school sports fields to stay active with family and friends while strengthening health and relationships.

Tip 2: Easy Walking – The Simplest Way to Stay Healthy
Walking is the best beginner-friendly exercise. Just wear comfortable clothes and athletic shoes, walk briskly, and aim for light sweating to reach moderate intensity. The HPA recommends walking 10,000 steps daily or starting with activities like gardening, household chores, dancing, or hiking. Even 10-minute sessions can effectively boost health.

Walking Tip: “Keep your head up, chest out, and tummy tucked in. Hold hands lightly at the waist, swing arms naturally, and step forward confidently.” Remember this mantra to easily incorporate walking into your daily routine!

Tip 3: Warm-Up Preparation – Enjoy Exercise Safely
Always warm up before exercising to protect your body. The HPA suggests accessing the “Health Learning Resources” or “YouTube Zone” on their website to download exercise videos like the “Office Worker Health Exercises” (15 minutes) or “Senior Health Exercises” (20 minutes). These routines are perfect for the whole family, providing 30 minutes of daily exercise for fun and fitness. Additionally, explore “Community Walking Trails” to plan your holiday outings.Three Exercise Tips for the Lunar New Year Inviting You to Enjoy Active Living Together (Image Source: Bureau of Labor Insurance FB)

Five Exercise Preparation Tips

★ Warm-up: Prevent injuries.
★ Cold-Weather Gear: Stay warm during winter workouts.
★ Avoid Alcohol: Refrain from drinking alcohol during exercise.
★ Health Assessment: Consult a doctor before exercising if you have chronic illnesses, and carry necessary medications.
★ Air Quality: If pollution is severe, exercise indoors with health routines and wear a mask if needed.

This Lunar New Year, invite your family to get moving together. Simple exercises can keep you healthy and ready to embrace a vibrant new year!
