When people think of Taipei–New Taipei–Keelung, night views, old streets, or seaside cafés often come to mind. Yet beneath these familiar scenes lies a land shaped by fascinating geological stories. The Geological Survey and Mining Management Agency under the Ministry of Economic Affairs has released the guidebook “Taipei–New Taipei–Keelung Living Circle — Climb Mount Datun: Exploring Mountains, Rivers and Sea from a New Perspective.” The publication presents six themed routes leading readers through cape coastlines, the volcanic terrain of Yangmingshan and Guanyinshan, the valleys of Nanshi Creek and the upper Keelung River, as well as historic gold, copper, and coal mining areas.
More than a simple route guide, the handbook serves as a compact nature companion. Along the journey, readers can admire dramatic mountain and coastal scenery while learning how volcanoes formed and how rivers carved the valleys. It also links geological features with mining heritage, environmentally sensitive zones, and sustainability topics. Attractions such as the Houtong Coal Miners Museum are included in suggested itineraries, adding cultural depth to walks, hikes, and short getaways.
The content reorganizes earlier popular science articles and incorporates updated travel information, connecting natural landscapes with everyday life. It also compiles details on nearby national parks, scenic areas, and specialty exhibition halls, making trip planning more convenient.
