Every May, Hong Kong's culinary world welcomes the annual French gourmet festival "Le French GourMay." This year, due to the pandemic, the event has been postponed to September. Nevertheless, the spotlighted region-the Rhône Valley in inland central France-continues to attract attention. The Rhône Valley is one of France's largest AOC wine regions, second only to Bordeaux and Burgundy, and is a classic region every French wine lover should know. The Rh&ocircne Valley in central inland France is the largest AOC wine-producing region in the country. The Rhône Valley stretches from north to south, and the climate differences give rise to two distinct wine styles. In the north, areas like Hermitage and Côte Rôtie grow only Syrah grapes, accounting for just 5% of the region&rsquos total production. These wines are full-bodied, with fine tannins and strong spicy aromas, often requiring aging to soften. Northern wineries are typically small, family-run, and focus on artisanal craftsmanship, characterized by elegance and precision.

In contrast, the southern Rhône enjoys a stable Mediterranean climate and grows a variety of grapes such as Grenache, Mourvèdre, and Syrah. Its representative region, Châteauneuf-du-Pape, allows blending up to 13 grape varieties, producing wines rich in fruit aroma, lower in acidity, and friendly to pair with food. Meanwhile, Tavel is known as the "King of Rosé," specializing in deeply fruity pink wines, even admired by author Ernest Hemingway. The southern region, influenced by the Mediterranean climate, mainly produces simpler wines. Though the event is delayed, it's a good opportunity to get familiar with the Rhône Valley's charm and be well-prepared for future wine selections.
