Taiwanese actress Barbie Hsu (Xu Xiyuan) traveled to Japan with her family during the Lunar New Year holiday but tragically passed away in Tokyo due to pneumonia caused by influenza complications. This incident has sparked discussions among Taiwanese travelers regarding medical assistance while visiting Japan.
According to statistics from Taiwan’s Tourism Administration, between January and November 2024, a total of 5,523,024 people visited Japan. Many of them have expressed concerns about Japan’s high medical costs and language barriers.
To help foreign visitors handle sudden health issues, the Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) has established a dedicated "Emergency Medical Guide for Foreigners" website, available in five languages: Japanese, English, Korean, Traditional Chinese, and Simplified Chinese. The site provides five major categories of medical services tailored to different needs, offering comprehensive medical consultation and treatment information.

★ Medical Consultation Guide: Offers different response strategies for various situations, including emergency treatment, routine medical visits, and self-medication guidelines. It also includes a multilingual "point-and-speak communication card" to help travelers communicate with medical staff despite language barriers.
★ Travel Insurance: The website offers online purchase of Japan travel insurance, covering high medical expenses, interpreter services, emergency support, and even COVID-19 treatment.
★ Emergency Contact Information: Lists emergency numbers for fire, traffic accidents, and other urgent situations. A 24-hour JNTO visitor call center is also available, offering support in Chinese, English, and Korean to assist travelers at any time.
Japan’s medical system may be unfamiliar to foreign travelers. JNTO’s initiatives aim to reduce language and cultural barriers, ensuring that visitors can receive prompt and safe medical assistance when needed.
