Shingles (herpes zoster), commonly known as a painful nerve-related rash, often causes stinging pain, burning sensations, or blistering rashes, and in some cases may lead to long-term nerve pain. Tainan has opened appointments for publicly funded vaccinations, allowing eligible residents to schedule shots at any of the city's 37 district health centers for early protection.

Eligible recipients include registered Tainan residents aged 55–64 who are Indigenous, and those aged 65 and above, who also qualify as low-income or lower-middle-income households and have high-risk chronic conditions. Applicants should bring their National Health Insurance card and relevant documents to make an appointment at local health centers.

Shingles is caused by the varicella-zoster virus and often occurs when immunity declines. Common symptoms include one-sided nerve pain followed by rashes and blisters. Early medical treatment and antiviral medication can help relieve symptoms and reduce the risk of complications. Statistics show a lifetime risk of about 32.2%, meaning roughly one in three people may develop the condition.

Vaccination is one of the most effective ways to prevent shingles, reducing both the risk of infection and the severity of symptoms. Those with questions about eligibility or procedures can consult local health centers. Eligible residents are encouraged to make appointments early to better protect their health and that of their families.
