Did you know? Farting is actually an important mechanism for expelling waste gas from the human body and is closely related to health. According to medical research, a healthy person farts about 14 times a day on average. After gut bacteria break down food residues, gases such as nitrogen, hydrogen sulfide, and ammonia are produced and expelled through farting, helping to maintain intestinal pressure and self-regulation. Not farting could be a warning sign of abnormal gastrointestinal motility, while excessive or particularly smelly farts may indicate digestive imbalance.

Causes of increased farting include imbalance of gut microbiota due to antibiotic use, digestive diseases (such as gastritis or constipation), and consumption of gas-producing foods like beans, potatoes, and radishes. Additionally, eating too fast, swallowing air, or drinking carbonated beverages can also increase gas output.6 Health Benefits of Farting (Image/Heho Health)6 Health Benefits of Farting (Image/Heho Health)

If farting decreases, it may be related to slowed gastrointestinal motility. For example, in patients with gastroparesis, gas accumulates and cannot be released, sometimes turning into belching. More alarmingly, certain smells of farts may be warning signs of colon cancer or enteritis. A fishy odor may result from intestinal bleeding an extremely foul smell could indicate inflammation and a "rotten egg smell" is often linked to high-fat, meat-heavy diets.

Experts recommend that if you notice abnormal frequency or odor of farts lasting more than two weeks, you should seek medical attention. Observing your farts can be a powerful way to monitor your digestive health.
