With the advancement of regenerative medicine, the health benefits of stem cells and exosomes have been increasingly confirmed by research. In addition to animal-derived sources, plant stem cells and exosomes have also become a focal point. Dr. Liu Jing-An and her team at the Tzu Chi Innovation Research Center discovered that stem cells and exosomes from the traditional Chinese herb Danshen show great potential in repairing aging cells.
According to the Shennong Bencao Jing, Danshen is classified as a superior medicinal herb with properties that promote blood circulation and strengthen heart energy. The Tzu Chi research team found that extracts from Danshen stem cells significantly enhanced the expression of the endoplasmic reticulum stress protein Bip1, the longevity gene SIRT1, the antioxidant gene NRF2, and the metabolic regulator gene PPAR-&gamma. Expression levels of NRF2 and PPAR-&gamma increased up to ninefold, while SIRT1 increased sixfold&mdashhighlighting Danshen&rsquos powerful antioxidant and anti-aging effects.

More importantly, using epigenetic clock technology, the study found that untreated ADSC-H55 cells appeared biologically two years older than their actual age. After treatment with the Danshen stem cell extract, the cellular age decreased by 4.9 years, demonstrating its remarkable effect in delaying cellular aging.

Plant-derived exosomes (PLEVs) show promise in drug delivery and the development of anti-aging products. Compared to synthetic liposomes, PLEVs are more biodegradable, safer, and less costly. Rich in bioactive lipids, proteins, and RNAs, they have potential applications in nanomedicine and offer new directions for anti-aging and cell repair product innovation.
As a modern application of traditional Chinese medicine, Danshen&mdashthrough stem cell and exosome technology&mdashis opening new possibilities in regenerative medicine and the healthcare industry.
