As the weather turns cooler, more children are coming down with colds and fevers. Many parents rely on cooling patches to help reduce their child&rsquos temperature. However, Dr. Chen Yingzhuang, a pediatrician at Ho-Shin Maternal and Child Clinic, advises against the use of cooling patches or ice pillows, as improper use could backfire.

Fever Has Two Stages, Care Must Adapt Accordingly

Dr. Chen explains that fever can be divided into two phases: the rising phase and the falling phase. During the rising phase, the brain raises the body's target temperature, causing chills. At this stage, it is important to focus on keeping the child warm. Using a cooling patch during this phase may worsen the discomfort. Furthermore, cooling patches only lower the skin&rsquos surface temperature locally and have limited effects on reducing the overall body temperature.020504p1.pngFever consists of two stages, and the care methods differ. During the falling phase, when the body starts cooling down and focuses on dissipating heat, sponging with warm water is the most effective way to reduce fever. This method helps the body return to its normal state more quickly.

International Guidelines Do Not Endorse Cooling Patches

Neither the Canadian Pediatric Society (CAPS), the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), nor the UK&rsquos National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) recognize the effectiveness of cooling patches. The materials and extreme temperatures of cooling patches may cause skin irritation or discomfort. Domestic fever management guidelines recommend warm water sponging as the only approved method for reducing fever, without the need for ice pillows or cooling patches.

When to Seek Immediate Medical Attention

If a child&rsquos fever exceeds 41°C (105.8°F) or they experience symptoms such as seizures, unconsciousness, rapid breathing, or an unexplained rash, immediate medical attention is required.020504p2.jpgSponging is the best method to reduce fever. (Photo: Provided by Heho Health)

Dr. Chen reminds parents that fever is often a natural immune response. Mild fevers can usually be observed and managed at home. However, it&rsquos important to use proper care methods and avoid unnecessary medications or products, ensuring the child&rsquos comfort as they recover.
