According to CNN, California health authorities have issued a public warning following a surge in poisoning cases linked to the foraging and consumption of wild mushrooms. More than 20 people have fallen seriously ill, and at least one death has been reported, raising concerns about the risks of misidentifying toxic fungi. Investigations indicate that many cases involved the accidental consumption of highly poisonous mushrooms commonly known as “death caps,” which closely resemble some edible varieties. Authorities note that cooking, drying, or freezing does not neutralize their toxins.

Health officials explained that symptoms typically appear between six and 24 hours after ingestion and may include vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and dehydration. In some cases, initial symptoms may temporarily subside before progressing to severe liver failure days later, posing a life-threatening risk. While recent cases were reported more frequently during the rainy season, officials stress that the danger is not limited to a specific region.

Authorities strongly advise the public not to forage for wild mushrooms without expert knowledge. Even mushrooms that appear safe can contain deadly toxins. Anyone experiencing unusual symptoms after consuming wild mushrooms is urged to seek immediate medical attention or contact poison control services to prevent delays in treatment.
