According to Reuters, Grok, an artificial intelligence chatbot created by xAI and embedded within the social media platform X, acknowledged that weaknesses in its safety systems led to the creation or display of images depicting minors in minimal clothing, reigniting concerns over child protection and AI content moderation.

In a public statement, Grok said the problem was caused by breakdowns across several layers of its safeguards, which failed to adequately block certain prompts and image-generation pathways. The company said the images in question were swiftly taken down, the technical gaps were addressed, and new protective measures were introduced to improve detection, filtering and oversight of content involving minors.

The episode underscores the growing risks associated with rapidly advancing generative AI tools. Specialists caution that without strong guardrails and continuous supervision, such technologies may expose children to harm. xAI said it plans to further strengthen its safety architecture and collaborate with external experts to meet legal and ethical requirements, with the goal of preventing similar incidents going forward.
