ROME — A worker trapped for nearly twelve hours following the partial collapse of the medieval Torre dei Conti in central Rome has died, hospital officials confirmed. The victim, identified as Octay Stroici, was involved in conservation work on the historic structure when a section unexpectedly gave way.

The tower, located near the Roman Forum and close to the Colosseum, had been unused for many years. Emergency teams worked throughout the day using specialized equipment and drones to reach the trapped workers.

Rescue Efforts and Challenges

Stroici, a Romanian national, remained conscious and responsive during the rescue, but suffered cardiac arrest while being transported to the hospital. Medical staff were unable to revive him.

Three other workers were successfully rescued, including another Romanian national. One of the survivors remains in critical condition.

The operation faced significant delays when a secondary collapse occurred, sending debris down and forcing teams to temporarily halt their efforts. Authorities stated that protective structures installed earlier helped shield the trapped worker during the second collapse.

One firefighter was injured in the process but the rest of the team resumed work safely. Officials later confirmed that the remaining parts of the tower were not at immediate risk of collapsing.

Official Response

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni expressed her sympathy, writing that her thoughts were with the worker fighting for his life and his family.

The Rome Prosecutor’s Office has opened a formal investigation into the accident, which took place during authorized conservation work.
