  Shisanhang Museum of Archaeology launches Heritage Day, with nearly 200-stall flea market in September

  The Shisanhang Museum of Archaeology will bring archaeology, crafts and cultural walks into this year's National Heritage Day activities. Alongside nearly 200 flea-market stalls, families can explore heritage and sustainable living through hands-on experiences.The event includes a family flea market, eco-friendly food and an outdoor concert featuring international musicians and youth groups from Taiwan, Hong Kong and Malaysia.Children can join the "Future Archaeology Team" sandbox excavation and learn how everyday objects may affect the future environment. A recycled paper-pulp workshop will turn human-face pottery designs into handheld mirrors. From September 19 to 20, visitors can also explore the Wugu Shitu Gong archaeological site and the historic Wugu Shourang Hall.With the theme "We All Live in Future Heritage", this year's National Heritage Day connects resource recycling, environmental protection and cultural preservation. Activities range from reusing secondhand goods to exploring prehistoric remains, encouraging visitors to consider the traces today's choices may leave behind.The activities run from September 12 through late September, including a sustainable market, concerts, family cultural tours and low-carbon walks.   WMO warns wildfires and heatwaves could undermine air-quality gains

  The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) on Monday released its latest annual Air Quality and Climate Bulletin, warning that increasingly severe heatwaves and wildfires are generating additional air pollutants that could undermine efforts to improve air quality and reduce health risks worldwide.The agency said climate change and air pollution are closely interconnected, with rising temperatures contributing to more frequent and intense heatwaves and wildfires. Although regulations in Europe and North America have helped reduce PM2.5 emissions from industry and transportation, exposure to fine particles produced by wildfire smoke has been increasing. The WMO also highlighted the serious health consequences associated with increasingly extreme fires and highly toxic smoke.PM2.5 consists of particles and droplets measuring less than 2.5 micrometers in diameter. Because these particles can penetrate deep into the lungs and enter the bloodstream, prolonged exposure can pose significant health risks. PM2.5 can come from a range of sources, including fossil-fuel-based industry, agriculture, household heating and transportation, as well as natural events such as wildfires and dust storms.The WMO said global monitoring should be strengthened for pollutants including aerosols such as black carbon and plastic particles, fine particulate matter and ground-level ozone. Some of these pollutants are widespread and may damage ecosystems but remain inadequately monitored. The organization called for coordinated policies addressing air quality and climate change together, stressing that the two issues require complementary action rather than being tackled separately.

  Wallaby wounded by arrow as wildlife attacks rise in Tasmania

  A series of attacks involving arrows and darts has raised concern in southern Tasmania after a wallaby was recently found with an arrow lodged through its body. It was the second wallaby reported to a local wildlife sanctuary within a week, with wildlife groups describing the recent incidents as an unusually serious series of attacks.The latest case was discovered near a disc golf reserve in Austins Ferry, while another wallaby was found in Clarendon Vale. Similar incidents were reported several weeks earlier in Oyster Cove, while a pademelon in Lenah Valley was injured by a dart. The latest wallaby remains mobile, but the arrow has passed through its body and could cause continuing pain when it walks or feeds.Hunting animals with bows and arrows is illegal in Tasmania. Wildlife rescuers have called for tighter controls on the sale of such equipment, warning that easy access could allow it to be misused. Without treatment, the injured animals could potentially die from infection, while authorities are prepared to conduct forensic examinations if the affected wildlife can be recovered.Wildlife sanctuary staff are continuing efforts to capture the injured wallaby and provide treatment before its condition worsens. Authorities are also asking members of the public with information about the recent incidents to come forward, in an effort to establish what is behind the series of attacks.
