During the Lunar New Year holiday, many people travel overseas and purchase local specialty foods as souvenirs before returning home. However, clear regulations govern what types of food may be brought back and in what quantities. To avoid penalties due to unfamiliarity with the rules, the Taiwan Food and Drug Administration (TFDA) reminds travelers to follow three key principles when bringing food into Taiwan: comply with quantity limits, keep items for personal use only, and do not resell them, ensuring a safe and worry-free return.
Doing some research before shopping is an important step in reducing risk. TFDA advises travelers to check the “Overseas Consumption Traffic Light” information on the Food and Drug Consumer Information platform before purchasing food abroad, in order to understand food safety conditions in different countries and make informed choices.
There are clear limits on the amount of food that may be brought back for personal use. General food items must have a total value of no more than USD 1,000 and weigh no more than 6 kilograms. For tablet or capsule products, each type is limited to a maximum of 12 bottles (boxes, cans, packages, or bags), with a combined total of no more than 36 bottles, and all items must remain in their original packaging. Exceeding these limits may result in inspection or confiscation upon entry.
Another commonly overlooked rule is that such food items are strictly for personal use and may not be resold. TFDA emphasizes that food brought into Taiwan without undergoing official import inspection may not be sold, whether through physical transactions or via e-commerce platforms and social media. Violations may result in fines ranging from NT$30,000 to as much as NT$3 million.
TFDA reminds travelers to familiarize themselves with and follow these regulations before returning home. Doing so not only helps avoid fines but also ensures food safety. With a little extra attention during the Lunar New Year holiday, souvenirs can be brought home safely, making the journey and seasonal greetings complete.
