Scams combining online romance and cryptocurrency investment continue to rise in Taiwan. A Taipei resident recently met someone through a dating app, and after building trust over time, the scammer began promoting cryptocurrency investments with promises of “guaranteed profits” and “zero risk.”

Believing the claims, the victim went to a bank to withdraw NT$500,000 in cash to hand over to the other party. Fortunately, bank staff noticed unusual behavior during the withdrawal process and immediately contacted the police for assistance.

Officers from the Wolongjie Police Station of Taipei City Police Department's Da'an Precinct investigated the case and identified it as a typical “pig butchering scam,” in which fraudsters first establish emotional relationships before luring victims into fake investment platforms or cryptocurrency schemes.

Police officers and bank employees jointly explained similar fraud cases and the scam tactics used by criminal groups. After listening to the analysis, the resident realized it was a scam and decided to cancel the transaction, successfully protecting NT$500,000 in savings.

Police reminded the public to stay alert when online acquaintances recommend investment opportunities, especially those claiming “guaranteed returns” or “risk-free profits.” People who encounter suspicious situations are encouraged to call the anti-fraud hotline 165 or emergency number 110 for verification.
