Brewed Protein, developed by Spiber, a company based in Tsuruoka, Japan, is an innovative textile made from plant sugars and potentially future discarded clothing through microbial fermentation.

The fiber possesses characteristics similar to cashmere and is fully recyclable. The company's goal is to establish a complete circular fashion economy model to address the 7 million tons of textile waste generated annually in the EU.Fashion brands have already started launching commercialized Brewed Protein clothing in some countries. Italian traditional wool producer Zegna Baruffa Lane Borgosesia has already blended Brewed Protein with merino wool, while luxury conglomerate Kering Group, which owns Gucci, Bottega Veneta, and Saint Laurent, is testing its application for future products at its Material Innovation Lab in Milan.

Fashion brands such as Burberry, Pangaia, Woolrich, Ron Herman, The North Face, Goldwin, Doublet, and Yuima Nakazato have already launched Brewed Protein garments in some countries.
