Taiwan's first maze garden is situated in Xinsheng Park within Taipei Expo Park, right next to Taipei Rose Garden, the largest rose garden in northern Taiwan. The maze garden is designed based on the Yin-Yang Five Elements concept and features five smaller mazes, divided into adult and children’s versions, ensuring visitors of all ages can have fun.
According to Lan Shu-fang, Director of the Taipei City Government’s Parks and Street Lights Office, the maze garden was completed in 2001, covering an area of 1.5 hectares. Originally planned by the Department of Cultural Affairs, the garden was built using over 50,000 plants, with a focus on afforestation and environmental protection.
The maze is enclosed by green hedges; the adult maze features taller banyan trees to create a sense of enclosure and add a challenge, while the children's maze is constructed with shorter Schefflera trees, ensuring a safer and easier experience for kids. Notably, when Schefflera blooms, its branches are adorned with delicate yellow flowers that resemble pearls, emitting a subtle fragrance that beautifully complements the blue sky and white clouds. The maze with shorter hedges allows children to navigate easily (Photo/Source: Taipei City Government Website)
Since its opening, the maze garden has remained a highlight of Xinsheng Park. To maintain the hedge landscape, pruning is carried out every two months, keeping the maze tidy and attractive. The garden also features large, colorful concrete pipes that have become popular photo spots. Inside these pipes, benches are thoughtfully provided, offering visitors a shaded rest area or shelter from rain.
According to Chuang Sheng-hao, Director of the Yuanshan Management Office, the surrounding lawn area frequently attracts families who bring tents and picnic mats to relax and enjoy the lush green space. Nearby facilities include the "Earth Adventure Playground" and the "Forest Climbing Recreation Facility", perfect for children to run and play, providing a delightful family-friendly weekend destination. Additionally, with Songshan Airport nearby, visitors can enjoy the breathtaking view of planes soaring across the sky.The brand-new "Forest Climbing Recreation Facility" is thrilling and recommended for children aged 12 and above (Photo/Source: Taipei City Government Website)
The maze garden is not only a serene green oasis within the city but also a fantastic leisure spot for families. Residents are encouraged to visit with their loved ones, embrace nature, and experience the joy of a leisurely stroll through Taipei's urban forest.
