Let's take a look at this week's top stories.

【1】Food Safety Concerns Over Imported Potatoes
Food safety concerns surrounding imported potatoes have drawn public attention. Taoyuan health authorities warn that potatoes showing sprouts, green skin, or wrinkles may contain increased levels of the natural toxin solanine. Even after removing sprouts or cooking at high temperatures, the toxin may remain. Consuming affected potatoes could cause nausea, diarrhea, or numbness. Officials advise consumers to avoid storing potatoes for long periods and discard any potatoes showing abnormalities.

【2】Taipei Expands Learning Voucher Program to Adults 18 and Older
Taipei City has expanded its citizen learning voucher program to include all residents aged 18 and above. The number of subsidies has also increased to 10,000 spots. New applicants may receive up to NT$2,000 in subsidies, while low-income households may qualify for NT$3,000. Online registration is open until May 28, with results scheduled to be announced on May 29. The city encourages residents to develop professional skills and personal interests through community college courses.

【3】New Taipei Launches Double-Decker Bus Tours Along the North Coast
New Taipei City has introduced the “Youth Mountain and Sea Line” double-decker sightseeing bus tour, combining popular North Coast attractions with guided travel experiences. One of the highlights is a route passing the Danjiang-Kejung Bridge, allowing passengers to preview the bridge ahead of its planned 2026 opening. City officials say the weekend service is expected to boost tourism and promote deeper travel experiences along the North Coast.

【4】Keelung–Ishigaki Ferry Route to Begin Service
A new ferry route between Keelung and Ishigaki Island in Okinawa is scheduled to launch on May 28. Travelers will be able to depart from Keelung at night, stay overnight onboard, and arrive in Japan the next morning. During the trial operation period, the ferry will run once a week, with one-way fares starting at around NT$2,000 before tax. The operator plans to increase services to twice weekly starting in July.

【5】Health Officials Warn Against Improper Use of Weight-Loss Injections
Weight-loss injections, commonly referred to as “slimming shots,” continue gaining popularity. Hsinchu City health authorities remind the public that these medications require professional medical evaluation and should not be purchased through online sellers, personal shoppers, or unknown sources. Officials warn that improper use may increase health risks and side effects, and recommend consulting licensed medical providers while maintaining healthy eating and exercise habits.
