A shocking attack in Mexico City has left two government officials dead, highlighting the escalating political violence in the country. On Tuesday, Ximena Guzmán, private secretary to the mayor, and José Muñoz, an adviser, were gunned down in what officials have confirmed was a direct and highly planned assault. The pair were en route to work in the Moderna neighborhood when their vehicle was intercepted and attacked. Video footage circulating on social media shows a man approaching their car and another suspect firing at them before fleeing. Authorities are investigating the footage and have already identified at least four suspects linked to the attack.

Mayor Clara Brugada and President Claudia Sheinbaum, both members of the ruling Morena party, expressed deep sorrow over the killings. Brugada called Guzmán a kind and wonderful woman and praised Muñoz&rsquos intelligence and dedication. President Sheinbaum, during a press conference, emphasized her support for the investigation and vowed justice for the victims, noting that both officials had long-standing roles in their political movement. The Mexico City Attorney General&rsquos Office reported that a motorcycle and a vehicle believed to be tied to the crime have been recovered, and the motive for the attack remains under investigation.Political violence is an alarming and persistent issue in Mexico.Political violence is an alarming and persistent issue in Mexico.

Political violence is an alarming and persistent issue in Mexico. In 2023, human rights group Data Cívica documented a record 661 attacks targeting politicians and political facilities. Many of these incidents involved local leaders or candidates. The killing of Guzmán and Muñoz follows a series of similar violent episodes, including the recent assassinations of a mayoral candidate in Guerrero and the sitting mayor of Cotija in Michoacán. As the country approaches future elections, the increasing frequency and brutality of such attacks raise serious concerns about safety and democracy in Mexico.
