Spring flower viewing season has arrived on Taiwan's North Coast, and iris flowers in the Songshan community of Shimen District, New Taipei City have entered full bloom, expected to last until mid-May. Purple, blue, white, and yellow flowers spread across layered terraces, forming a distinctive landscape that has recently drawn increasing visitor attention.
The most iconic feature of the community is its century-old stone-built terraces. Constructed with local volcanic rocks using traditional dry-stacking techniques, the stones interlock without mortar, reflecting early rural craftsmanship. Traditional stone houses remain nearby, forming a complete cultural landscape. During bloom season, irises line the terrace edges, creating a clear and layered visual pattern.
In addition to flower viewing, the community promotes rural revitalization and eco-friendly farming. Black rice is cultivated as a key local product, using traditional sun-drying methods to enhance aroma and texture. Rest areas and small stalls are available, allowing visitors to explore local produce and rural life.
The site is open during the bloom season. Due to narrow access roads, visitors are advised to use public transportation. From Tamsui MRT Station, take a bus to Laomei Stop, then transfer to a community shuttle and get off at Shuntian Temple Stop, followed by a 5-minute walk. As shuttle services are limited, visitors should check schedules in advance and plan accordingly. Wearing non-slip footwear and avoiding stepping on or picking flowers are also recommended to protect the environment.
